Burning Laptops? Exploding Batteries?

There are several news articles circulating around of fault in laptop batteries causing them to explode and catch fire. Burning the laptops in the process. Several manufacturers have also recalled thousands of batteries, citing technical flaws.

It is well known that, laptops do get hot and the batteries also get hot. Some precautionary measures may help, but it may not completely prevent a fire. A technical fault inside the battery may not be apparent when looking at the battery. A physical fault, like a crack or a rupture or leakage is immediately noticeable and such a battery should not be used under any circumstances. It should be disposed responsibly.


Some points to consider:

Keep laptop on a flat surface and keep all vents clear of any obtrusions, like clothing and paper.

Keep all the cooling vents on the laptop cleaned. No dust balls, hair and other particles blocking them.

Make sure that you are using the correct battery and charger for your lasptop.

If you feel that the laptop is getting hotter than usual, switch it off and check the battery compartment as well. If it is abnormally hot then consult the laptop manufacturer.

Do not leave laptop unattended and especially when a child is allowed to use it.
